Closet plant shuttered, assets to be auctioned

A Homag bander is up for auction.

ClosetMaid's Maryland factory has closed down and production moved offshore. Its assets are now available for purchase at auction.

ClosetMaid, founded in 1965, is a leading North American manufacturer and marketer of closet organization, home storage, and garage storage products, and sells to some of the largest home center retail chains, mass merchandisers, and direct-to-builder professional installers.

In 2017, the company was acquired by New York-based Griffon Corp., and in 2023 Griffon announced that it was shuttering its factory in Grantsville, Maryland, and according to the company's first-quarter report is shifting work overseas. “In response to market conditions, Griffon announced in May 2023 that CPP is expanding its global sourcing strategy to include long handle tools, material handling, and wood storage and organization product lines for the U.S. market,” the report said.

The facility, as seen in the video below, was an automated factory with what the auction house calls an "unprecedented offering of exceptionally well-maintained late model equipment" with equipment as new as 2023. The equipment includes CNC machining centers, edgebanders, dust collection systems, saws, material handling and more. A partial list of the equipment and supplies can be seen below or on the auction house's website.

The auction starts on April 30 at 10 a.m. ET and ends on May 7 at 10 a.m. ET.
