FDMC 300: Steady sales, cautious outlook for cabinet & closet makers

As a segment, the cabinetry and closets/home organization manufacturers in the FDMC 300 experienced modest growth in overall sales, despite the effects of acquisitions, expansions, closures, and offshore competition. Combined 2025 sales for these 100-plus firms were roughly $15.6 billion compared to slightly more than $15.2 billion in 2024, and accounted for 21.8 percent of this year’s FDMC 300 sales total of $71.4 billion.

Published annually in April, the FDMC 300 tracks North America’s largest wood products manufacturers and ranks them by sales. (See about the FDMC 300, below.)

Changes in the FDMC 300
This year saw several changes to the FDMC 300 list, including the addition of eight firms in the cabinets and closets segment: Burrows Cabinets (#231), CNC Cabinetry (#219), Dutchmaid Woodworking (#251), Hilton Cabinets (#266), HIS Cabinetry & Countertops (#237), Merit Kitchens (#285), Modular Closets (#293), and SOLLID Cabinetry (#230).

There was also growth through acquisitions, plant additions and product expansions. Of note (in chronological order):

On the downside, the past year also saw its share of closures.

Dropped from the list were: Starved Rock, which closed its doors in April after 30 years in business; Kabinart (United Cabinet Company, LLC), which filed for bankruptcy in October; Tri-Star Cabinet and Top Co., which announced in October that its once-promised rebuild after a fire wasn’t feasible; and Reborn Cabinets, which shuttered operations in November following the abrupt closure of parent company Renova Home Partners.

Meanwhile, the saga of Candlelight Cabinetry continues. The cabinet manufacturer abruptly furloughed workers in February, but may be on a comeback following its May acquisition by the newly formed management group Candlelight Curated Inc.

Industry outlook
At print time, the latest NKBA/John Burns Q1 2026 Kitchen & Bath Market Index (KBMI) shows the score held at 55 out of 100 for a consecutive quarter, indicating flat industry activity and steady sentiment. The industry is projecting low-to-mid-single-digit growth, with retailers the most optimistic (+6%) and manufacturers the most cautious (+1.8%).

Consumer uncertainty is the leading growth constraint, identified by 48% of the kitchen and bath professionals surveyed, followed by rising material costs (30%). The skilled labor shortage also continues to have an impact.

“K&B professionals told us that many of the same challenges continued to impact their bottom line during the first quarter of 2026,” said NKBA/KBIS Global President & CEO Bill Darcy. “While the level of concern over tariffs eased a bit, elevated costs are still the number one driver of consumer hesitancy, inhibiting the entry- and mid-level project growth that is so important to overall industry growth.”

Darcy also noted, “While there are considerable headwinds facing all K&B industry segments, some are definitely faring better than others. Despite these stubborn barriers to more significant growth, we continue to see indications of improvement ahead that should ultimately benefit the entire industry.”

Although the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association’s March Trend of Business Survey shows a year-over-year drop of 7.7% in March compared to 2025 figures, the month-over-month change was positive, with sales up 13.9% compared to February, and cabinet quantity up 13.7%. Estimated sales by responding companies year-to-date through March were $512.212 million, and cabinet quantity was 1.348 million.

According to the 2026 Houzz & Home Study, 50% of the homeowners surveyed said they plan to undertake projects in 2026, down slightly from 52% in 2025. Of the activity in 2025, kitchen (26%) and bath (25% guest, 23% primary) renovations were the most popular, with closet and laundry room each accounting for 14%. Gen Z (76%) leads in interior room remodeling projects, followed closely by Millennials (73%).

The Elfa brand and Custom Spaces/Closet Works are now sold under the Bed, Bath & Beyond umbrella following April’s acquisition by the company of The Container Store (#30).

About the FDMC 300
Now in its 40th year, the FDMC 300 is the woodworking industry’s oldest recognized ranking — by sales — of the largest North American manufacturers of cabinetry, furniture, architectural millwork, retail fixtures, home organization, windows/doors, components and other wood-related products.

Rankings for the FDMC 300 are based on the prior year’s sales information. Since many companies are privately owned, the number provided is considered an estimate unless otherwise designated by FY (Fiscal Year-Investor Relations report). Information is provided by companies or, in some cases, may be based on research or from recognized sources.

The 2026 FDMC 300 is sponsored by (in alphabetical order): Black Bros.,  Daubert Chemical, DVUV,  IMA Schelling Group, Panel Processing Inc., Peak Toolworks, SATA , SWISS KRONO, and Vortex Tool Co.

The annual report was published in the April issue of FDMC magazine. Updates of data for FDMC 300 firms and the various industry segments are posted throughout the year at WoodworkingNetwork.com/FDMC300. For questions or inclusion in the FDMC 300, contact Karen Koenig at [email protected]
