Designing a home office for two

Mike Steiner, Bethesda Closets, working with designer Myron Wolman, entered this grand and one-of-a-kind home office in the Home Office: Over 150 square foot category of the 2023 Top Shelf Design Awards.

The wallpaper, dark cabinetry and matte gold finish offer an old-world charm.

Here’s how Steiner describes the project:

Project title: Good Ole’ Times

Project details: We were brought in by designer Myron Wolman to create this one-of-a-kind home office space for two people. The new home had an unused landing space that worked perfectly for additional office space instead of just another sitting area. Since it was out in the open the main goal was to have this space look like artwork. By using different styles of wallpaper to complement the dark wood cabinetry and matte gold hardware, it brought an old-world theme back to life.

The customer wanted to hide the printers so those went behind doors, but they still wanted a display for books and collectibles. We also mirrored each side so there is ample file storage and office supply storage for both people. We finished off the top with a 1-inch MDF marble top for the peninsula working space. At the top, they wanted picture lights for all three sections of shelves, so we ordered matching door panels and then installed the lights on top of them for a more traditional and finished look.

Projection construction: We installed our cabinets after Myron had the wallpaper put in. We started with upper shelves stacked on the lower cabinets to reach the 9-foot ceilings. Next, we applied a 14-inch panel at the top to conceal the wires and fasteners. We used decoration moulding for the crown and applied our Milan-styled fronts below that. To attach the styled panels around the lights, we used a mirror mastic glue and finish nails inside the topsides of the crevices to secure them with no visible marks.

To finish off the peninsula, we applied the MDF top to each side of the stand-alone cabinet, which covered the seam of the back-to-back cabinets. Wooden dowels and a metal bracket were used to connect the peninsula countertop to the one on the back wall.

Materials used: All products were sourced from Organizers Direct Industries (ODI) unless listed otherwise: Coco melamine panels and shelves, King soft-close slides, 1-inch MDF marble countertop, and 10-inch gold modern handles.

Equipment used: LiveStorage

The 2023 Top Shelf awards winners were announced on April 13 in West Palm Beach, Florida, during a reception sponsored by CCF Industries.
