If you didn’t know, April 26 is Get Organized Day. Not to be confused with Get Organized Month in January or World Organizing Day on May 20, Get Organized Day is dedicated to cleaning up and decluttering homes and offices, according to NationalToday.com.

While the origins of the day are unknown, the importance of organization and decluttering for mental health, managing stress, and maintaining focus are well known, according to various studies.

“Getting organized, unfortunately, does not happen overnight. It is a muscle that you need to work daily to see the results. Putting things where they belong, keeping up with the laundry and creating spaces to place important items are key,”  wrote Professional Organizer Tina Hazen of Think Inside the Boxx, in a blog post on napogetorganized.com.

NationalToday.com shares five fun facts about clutter:

1. Finding what’s lost
According to the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), the average American spends about 8,700 hours (one year) of their lives searching for lost or misplaced items!
2. All that extra baggage
According to NAPO, we end up not using 80% of the items we keep.
3. Items we look for
Research by Ikea says the top five items men look for in their homes are clean socks, the remote control, wedding album, car keys, and their driver’s license; while for women, they are a favorite pair of shoes, child’s toy, wallet, lipstick, and the remote control!
4. Benefitting from decluttering
According to The National Soap and Detergent Association, decluttering the average home removes 40% of the housework.
5. It's the messiest in Texas!
In 2015, Molly Maid, a cleaning organization, listed two Texan cities — Houston and Austin — as the top two of the 10 messiest cities needing a deep clean.
