Design Portfolio: Transforming projects with TFL
Design Portfolio

Thermally fused laminate (TFL) are durable and versatile decorative panels. They have excellent scratch and wear resistance and can be manufactured with enhanced visual and performance characteristics, including deep texture, making them popular for furniture, cabinets, wall accents, and store fixture specifications.

TFL is made by fusing a resin-impregnated sheet of décor paper directly to a substrate. Particleboard and MDF are perfect substrates for TFL because they are consistent, uniform in strength, and defect-free, creating a durable finished product. Heat and pressure activate the resin in the saturated décor paper, creating a cross-linked bond with the substrate. This fuses the décor paper to the substrate, creating a finished panel ready to be machined.

Why We Like It!
Price, ease of maintenance and design options are the top reasons her company is a true fan of TFL and uses it in 90% of their luxury closet projects. “TFL is very easy to maintain – it can be easily cleaned/wiped down.” She also extols the variety of colors, patterns and textures available with TFL, which make it a great option. “Most customers can’t tell the difference [compared to solid wood].”

Inspiration: TFL’s enhanced visual and tactile characteristics make it nearly impossible to distinguish from solid wood in furniture and other applications. Highly durable, it is the perfect choice for many residential and commercial environments, including corporate, healthcare, and hospitality.

As a finished decorative panel, TFL can be easily fabricated on standard panel processing equipment, eliminating the need for furniture and cabinet makers to install laminating lines. The consistency of TFL allows for perfect grain matching across doors, drawer fronts, and other elements in residential and commercial spaces. An important advantage of TFL is its matching capabilities with various other surfaces, including high pressure laminate (HPL) and three-dimensional laminates (3DL). TFL manufacturers align their products with design partners to offer complementary products that ensure harmonious and natural looks in any project.

Deep Texture
Surface texture is a key attribute in TFL decorative panels. Steel press plates emboss the décor overlay to create deep ridges to heighten the realism of wood grain, stone, or abstract designs. Synchronized textures and finishes are defined as aligning patterns and textures to replicate a product as it exists in nature. TFL producers work harmoniously with décor print suppliers and press plate designers to ensure the pattern (often woodgrain) and texture are perfectly aligned in each press cycle. The result is a laminated product with wood grain and texture perfectly matched and indistinguishable from natural wood veneer and stone. Synchronized textures are available as a two-sided product, providing flexibility to designers and fabricators.

With these advantages, TFL panels are widely used in laminate flooring, office furniture, closet systems, store fixtures, and cabinets. They are also used in health care, hospitality, commercial, and retail settings.
