Steadfast dedication and a self-starter are just two of the phrases used to describe Jacob Achatz, Components manager at JB Cutting Inc., a cabinetry and closet components manufacturer based in Mount Clemens, Michigan.

In the four years since joining the company as a nested-based router operator, Achatz has quickly moved up the ranks. “When Jake joined in 2019 JB Cutting was around $8 million in annual revenue with 35 employees,” says one nominator. “We are now pushing $20 million with around 90 people. Jake was an integral part of that growth. He has been constantly challenged to grow not only the business but himself as a leader. Having Jake on the team has greatly reduced the overburden of work on the owners and key directors, allowing them to focus more on JB Cutting's future plans.”

“He is our go-to guy for machine programming, and he assists in new product development.” He adds, “Jake also loves to learn, he has continued to educate himself in key programs such as AlphaCAM, WoodWOP and CutRite.”

“Kristina Alvarez is truly a rising star in sales force management and people development at Masonite,” says her nominator. As regional sales manager for the interior and exterior door manufacturer’s retail Home Depot account, Alvarez, 35, oversees a team of 12 area sales managers across multiple states west of Colorado.

“Under her leadership, the region consistently outperforms sales targets by 5-10% and has been the top performing sales region within our company four out of the last five years. Kristina's performance at driving new business and profitable growth within the North American Residential segment was a key reason she received the Game Changer Award in 2018, and again with her field team management peers in 2022.”

She adds, “Kristina's passion for motivation and inspiration is evident by the engagement on her team. For the past several years Kristina has maintained one of the lowest turnover rates and highest engagement scores within her entire division. Beyond the quantifiable measures, the qualitative tone on her team is one of openness, encouragement and a level of candor that is unmatched by other regions.”

“You can be a good leader, achieve your results, and still not be a developer of your people. A great leader, like Kristina, is a developer of her team. She helps them fine-tune the areas where they are strong already and puts together a plan to strengthen the areas where they are having challenges. Masonite is fortunate to have Kristina on our team.”

JW Arpin, owner/operator, Arpin & Sons Contracting – Engineering based in Oakland Park, Florida, is one of the foremost experts of "Dade County Pine.” His work with the species includes reclamation, preservation, education, research, carpentry, and fine woodwork.

"Dade County Pine" (Pinus elliottii var. densa), is a rare pine lumber species that can only be acquired through reclamation work in South Florida and has been protected from harvest since the 1970s, his nominator notes. “DCP possesses extremely unique qualities not found in other pine species. Old-growth DCP is unusually hard and dense- and will readily sink in water. JW has been performing density and specific gravity testing of his stock, with numerous samples exceeding 80lb/ft3 in density and specific gravity values well above 1 in relation to water. These documented figures are comparable to the densest wood species in the world.”

The nominator adds, “Through [JW’s] carpentry, reclamation, and woodwork experience, he recognized this factor and has been working to document the values and further awareness. Currently, samples of JW's stock are being studied by professors at the UF Forestry School and by a senior scientist with the US Forest Service. He is also working with the foremost old-growth tree expert in the country to document the very few old-growth trees still alive.”

The 39-year-old Arpin also is working with the Broward Trust to create the first DCP museum in existence and is a senior board member of The Broward Trust for Historic Preservation.

The associate professor of Wood Product Manufacturing at Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas, Jordan Backs “is one of the most influential forces on young adults entering the woodworking industry and, by extension, the industry itself,” his nominator says.

“What separates Jordan is that he goes above and beyond to elevate those around him. From accompanying students to trade shows and leadership seminars, connecting students with companies, or staying late into the evening to help a student work on a project, Jordan has consistently dedicated his time to those around him.” He is also involved in industry recruitment efforts. “He finds them where they are, fosters their interest, and prepares them for their work as professional woodworkers. These efforts go beyond setting up a table at a career fair; he often travels across the country to high school shops and has even gone as far as to partner with a woodworking YouTube influencer as an innovative way to reach interested young people.”

Backs also practices what he preaches. “One day he will impart the importance of networking and lifelong learning to his students, then he will turn right around and join the AWI Technical Committee and AWI Board of Directors so he can learn about the most technical parts of the industry. Beyond technical skills, Jordan sets an example for his students by being the most patient, kind, and passionate person I have had the pleasure to meet.”

The 36-year-old Backs is also a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician, a small business owner and operator of his farm, and a leader in his church.

In fact, that’s just one of the many things make her work in this space unlike other showrooms - nothing is for sale.”

This was very evident when he provided mentorship and resources to a young woodworker starting their own business, ultimately leading to their success in the industry.”

His nominator adds, “A phrase that aptly describes Jon is ‘a compassionate trailblazer,’ as he combines his innovative spirit with a deep understanding of the human element. If you ever go to talk to Jon about a potential idea, it won’t take long until the words ‘keep it simple’ come out of his mouth; he stands by what he preaches and encourages progress over complexity.”

“As the only female in the lab, [Karema] has had to navigate stereotypes and stand firm in her knowledge of the machines. At the finishing specialist’s North American headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, “[Karema] has contributed ideas in the lab that our customers utilize in their own shops, such as putting tape down in the cleaning trolleys to save time and resources during clean up. Courtney Hogue, 30, doesn’t shy away from a challenge. She started three years ago at Bella Innovative Modern Cabinetry (Bella IMC) as the Marketing director, with zero experience in the cabinet industry. “I was skeptical using social media, but she persisted and was right. Hogue eventually took over all office management, and in January was promoted to CEO of the Huntertown, Indiana-based cabinetry producer, where she is also the director of Sales and Marketing. “She has shown the tenacity to lead a growing company into the future. Some people have to will themselves to be motivated and some are just born with it. She was born with an overabundance of motivation.”

In his triple-duty role as Panelization/Manufacturing manager, CNC programmer and architectural designer, Steven Levine, 34, has advanced and streamlined the process at Acorn Deck House Co. by Trudeau Homes Int.

At the Acton, Massachusetts-based custom homes prefabricator, Levine helped spearhead the transition from 2D AutoCAD building component drawings into 3D framing models. “Making this jump has eliminated much of the need for by-hand design, drafting, annotations, and revisions,” he says. “3D modeling/framing allows us to automate and optimize component design and increase accuracy and efficiency by a huge percent.”  The panelization process for a large house has been reduced from over a month to just two weeks, “with much higher accuracy and nearly no mistakes down the road.”

Also, in his role as a CNC programmer, Levine revamped existing programs to increase efficiency and minimize labor requirements for every program/product run and helped “re-invent’ the mahogany windows designed and crafted by Acorn so they can be made in any configuration imaginable. At Acorn, Levine also is involved in architectural design.

Levine’s efforts extend beyond the immediate workplace. “I've also had the chance to help mentor/teach a recent high school graduate who was unsure of what he wanted/could do for his future,” and assisted in getting him a job in the industry.  “I'm also working on a program to work with a local technical high school to link students with Acorn Deck House to have regular factory tours and learning opportunities for classes and intern opportunities, with the hope of full-time employment after graduation.”

The general manager at Mill Services Inc., Leonard Lilley, 30, is driven to provide growth opportunities for the company and its employees.

When Lilley started at the Cobleskill, New York-based Mill Services, a producer of eastern white pine primed fingerjoint trim boards and products, the company’s productivity, efficiency, and employee morale were low. “Since then, we have improved our productivity [and] efficiency by 25 percent, doing the same level of production with 75 people vs.100 people four years ago. Our morale has improved to the point where people enjoy coming to work [and] our turnover rates have reduced by nearly 25 percent,” he says.

“This year we are investing over $250,000 in capital improvements to improve the processes of our facility, including installing an automated unstacker on a production line. Through some turnover and restructuring, our leadership team is slowly but surely becoming an actual team – once a month two members from leadership come in and make breakfast for the entire facility – and we have weekly meetings to discuss, improvements and growth opportunities for the business.” The improvement at the company wouldn't have been possible without “a group of people who desire to be a team and be better day in and day out,” he says.

“Another thing we have implemented in recent times is community involvement. We now participate in wood projects with the local Boy Scout troop, building them plaques as well as flag return boxes.”

[In effect] reducing material costs has allowed us to produce a higher quality product, which makes customers want to do more business with us.”

Mast’s ambition and efforts have not gone unnoticed. “To-do lists are so scared of Malachi they seem to get themselves done on their own,” his nominator jokes. But more seriously, he adds, “Malachi is one of the owners of Coppes Napanee and he cares about every aspect of the business. Making Coppes Napanee the best place to work for is what motivates him.”

The president of Piddi Design Associates Ltd./Piddi Design Inc., Caitlin Murphy, 36, “has been a thought leader with a keen eye on business development and sales growth, while continuing to positively impact her community by growing her business,” says her nominator.

Since launching Mickey in 2019, CEO Alex Rabens, 35, has been focused on helping more American wood suppliers connect with domestic buyers with ease and complete transparency.

An e-commerce marketplace/platform, Mickey has been used by forest product suppliers to sell their whole logs as well as hardwood products to buyers across the globe. In 2022, Rabens partnered with MaterialsXchange (MX), an LBM marketplace, and furthered the New York-based company’s mission of connecting LBM, OSB, and panel suppliers with construction firms throughout the country.

“Alex launched Mickey at a time when the U.S. imported $2.4 trillion in consumer goods, while only exporting $1.4 trillion. That created a $915.8 billion deficit and was among the highest goods deficit on record,” says his nominator. “He sees the trade disparities as one of the biggest challenges American suppliers need to overcome. And within the country’s own borders, Alex stands behind the U.S. ‘Buy America Program’ which is paving the way for federal construction projects to source materials and supplies within its own country. He took on an industry that has been mired in antiquated processes and procedures and built a company that brings commodities into the future with tools, resources, and tech that has never been done before.”
