Overall, 2023 was a positive year for the FDMC 300, a ranking of the largest wood products manufacturers in North America. Although some companies experienced declines in sales compared to the year prior, a majority saw sales stay steady or increase. As a group, sales for the FDMC 300 — which includes manufacturers of furniture, cabinetry, architectural millwork, flooring, windows/doors, retail fixtures, closets/home organization, and other wood-related products — grew 2% over the previous year, reaching a new high of $75.5 billion.

At 45.6%, furniture manufacturers comprised the largest dollar segment in this year’s group. However, unlike last year, sales by contract furniture manufacturers outpaced residential, accounting for 23.9% and 21.7% respectively. This could be due in part to offices and other institutions refurbishing their environments in an attempt to draw employees back on-site after COVID-related remote work programs.

Meanwhile, sales by manufacturers of cabinetry and closets products comprised 20.9% of the overall total, a percentage similar to last year’s FDMC 300.

With the inclusion of AHF Products, the fenestration and flooring segment took the biggest leap, accounting for 27.2% of the FDMC 300’s sales. The retail fixtures and architectural woodwork/millwork segments remained relatively unchanged, accounting for 2.2% and 1.9% of the overall total. The specialty products segment, which includes musical instruments, was also at 2.2%.

Labor recruitment and retention, along with the economy, were among the top concerns in 2023 and will continue to be in 2024, especially with this being a presidential election year. That said, many FDMC 300 respondents have already announced plans to expand or are otherwise projecting growth in 2024. An in-depth look at some of the market segments will be included in upcoming issues of FDMC magazine.
