Officials investigate fire at Tolko Ind.
VERNON, BC -- Investigators were trying to determine what started a fire at the Tolko Industries plywood mill that led to the temporary evacuation of more than 300 people at five neighboring trailer courts.

According to the Vernon Morning Star, the July 12 fire started in a hog fuel pile consisting of bark and sawdust. The fire created thick smoke that created a hazard for nearby residents.

The newspaper quoted the fire chief as saying the fire may have been cuased by spontaneous combustion considering the recent heat wave. The chief credited the mill workers for their efforts to prevent the fire from spreading before the first of 50 firefighters could arrive on the scene.

Damage to the plant was minimal and was not expected to disrupt production.
