Utah couple wins Freud/Woodcraft glass panel contest

PARKERSBURG, WV– Mike and Teresa Scanlan of Park City, Utah, saw the Freud/Woodcraft “Creative Glass Panel” competition as an opportunity to learn new skills and hopefully win a prize. Their plan paid off. The husband and wife team won the grand prize, valued at $10,500, which includes a trip to Italy and $1,000 worth of Freud products.

“Creative Glass Panel” contestants were required to build a project using extended tenons and glass panels. Entries were accepted from August 1-December 31, 2010.

Learning more about making stained glass panels appealed to Mike and Teresa, so they entered the contest and Teresa signed up for a copper foil class. She created a glass flower panel, and then Mike designed the frame, selecting a Greene and Greene style to go along with the simple lines of the glass flower. He constructed the 13" x 18" frame from mahogany, using ebony plugs. The couple named their finished glass panel “Greene and Greene Meets Scanlan and Scanlan.”

“We are both so excited to be chosen as the winner of the contest!! Italy is someplace we have always wanted to go,” the Scanlans said after learning they are grand prize winners. “Mike has been a woodworker for 20+ years, but has never entered a contest before. The opportunity to work as a team on a project together was really exciting for us. We are still a little bit in shock that we won.”

The Scanlons’ first stop in Italy will be a tour of the Freud plant at Udine, where they will receive a one-of-kind custom engraved saw blade. After the tour they will head to Venice for two days of sightseeing and relaxation.

Other top winners and prizes are: second place, Anthony and Courtney Hodges of Singers Glen, Virginia (“Wine Theme Glass Panel”), a package of Freud products worth $1,000; and third place, Clint and Lacey Loumaster of Lenexa, Kansas (“Spring Flowers”), Freud products worth $200.

Receiving honorable mention are: Lowell Kasden of Fulton, Maryland.; Michael G. Damstra of Columbia City, Indiana; Nancy and Bruce Herz of Tampa, Florida; Jeff Outman of Pocahontas, Illinois; and The Waggoner Family (Jeff, Julie, Jaida, Jalen, Jordan and Janae) of Frankfurt, Indiana.
