American of Martinsville To Cut 400 Jobs

MARTINSVILLE, VA – American of Martinsville said it will cut workers at its Redd Level manufacturing plant, according to the Martinsville Bulletin. The facility employs 703 full-time workers and the layoffs will affect about 400 of those workers.

The job cuts only affect wood furniture workers. The cuts will not affect the upholstered furniture portion of the company that is housed at the same location.

Noel Chitwood, president, said, “Unfortunately, the marketplace is changing. Customers now demand a much broader range of products than we can produce in Martinsville.”

“Ultimately, we have been forced to conclude that if we are going to meet customer expectations and remain competitive in the marketplace, we must shift the bulk of our casegoods production overseas,” Chitwood said.
