ATLANTA -- The Home Depot confirmed its payment data systems were breached in a cyber-attack, which could potentially impact customers using credit and debit cards at its U.S. and Canadian stores.

The Home Depot Investigates Credit BreachThe attack was discovered by company officials on Sept. 2 and appears to have occurred as far back as April 2014. Currently there is no evidence that debit PIN numbers were compromised, company officials said, however the investigation into the cyber-attack is not yet complete. There is no evidence that the breach has impacted stores in Mexico or customers who shopped online at homedepot.com.

In response The Home Depot is offering free identity protection services, including credit monitoring, to any customer who used a payment card at a Home Depot store in 2014, from April on. Customers can learn more at homedepot.com or by calling 1-800-466-3337.

In 2012 The Home Depot began to offer dedicated credit services to professional contractors, who make up approximately 30 percent of annual sales. The “First for Pro” program provides faster checkout for professional contractors as well as two different credit options. It is unknown if this was included in the breach. Stephen Holmes, a corporate spokesman, said he could not provide additional information beyond what the company has already disclosed.
