OSU seeks technical director for TallWood Design Institute lab

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The TallWood Design Institute (TDI) at Oregon State University is looking for someone with woodshop management experience to serve as full-time technical director of its R&D lab.

Iain Macdonald, director of TDI, said the ideal candidate knows how to maintain and operate equipment including 3D CAD and CNC machinery. “It would be a fun position for someone that likes variety, since each project is different,” Macdonald said. “Also, (we need) someone who would enjoy mentoring students and training a wide range of people from the industry, not just manufacturers, but architects, engineers and contractors.”

The technical director manages the technical activities of the TDI and the technical facilities of the A.A. “Red” Emmerson Advanced Wood Products Laboratory. The Technical Manager provides specialized technical support for research, testing, industry training and education projects focused on developing new wood-based products and/or related hardware components, identifying and improving related manufacturing and production techniques, and testing products, materials and building systems.

The TallWood Design Institute actively partners with Oregon building design professionals, engineers, building contractors and wood products manufacturers to carry out applied research, create education and training programs, and support product development and testing of structural wood building materials and systems, TDI occupies a 14,200 sq. ft. advanced wood products laboratory with wood products manufacturing capabilities and a large structural testing floor.
