Patty Miller, Boutique Closets and Cabinetry, designed a 23-inch-deep floating desk for two in a guest room that doubles as a home office. The project won honorable mention in the Home Office: Under 150 sq. ft. category in the 2023 Top Shelf Design Awards. Winners were announced on April 13 at a reception sponsored by CCF Industries during the Closets Conference & Expo, held in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Here’s how Miller describes the project:

Project Title: Home Office Guest Room

Project Details: This home office is in the client’s second home and also serves as a guest bedroom. We needed office space for two people, a printer and files, drawers, hanging and shelves for guests. Since this cabinetry spanned more than 96 linear inches, to avoid any seams, I staggered the cabinet depth from 24 inches deep to 21 feet deep and back to 24 inches deep.

Projection Construction: This project consists of a 23-inch deep floating desk for two, supported with a small steel rod. The steel rod was used because of the 64-inch length of the floating desk; if someone sat on it, it could break. The depth of the desk remained 23 inches so that the desktop would not exceed the 24-inch depth of the tall right and left cabinets. The 24-inch deep, 90-inch tall cabinetry on the right of the desk has space for a printer, two drawers, and hanging for a guest.

The left side of the desk is strictly for guest storage. There are outlets in each cabinet, right and left of the desk. The right outlet services the printer, and the outlet on both sides powers an outlet/USB, which we placed on the exterior panels to the right and left of the desk. There are also two round grommets on the desktop that allow the customer to plug items in below the desk. The lower cabinets are 90 inches high with 24-inch high by 24-inch deep upper cabinets for extra storage and guest linens. A ¾-inch high by 24.75-inch deep transition shelf allows a seamless transition to the upper shelves. We included an ¾-inch wall panel below the desk to avoid shoe scuffs on the wall. And for added interest, we had a textured wall covering added above the desk.

Materials Used: Tafisa Apres' Ski melamine and Apres' Ski Cove Crown, Emtek handles, and steel rod for support

Equipment Used: KCD Closet Pro
