California black oak: An oak with several differences

California black oak is in the red oak group of species, but its source of supply (it grows primarily in northern California and southwest Oregon), physical properties (it is weaker than most red oaks, but machines better), appearance (it is not as red, but has tighter grain), and processing differences (drying is difficult) merit a special discussion of this species.

West Fraser closing Fraser Lake Sawmill

West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. said that it will permanently close its sawmill in Fraser Lake, British Columbia, following an orderly wind-down. The decision is the result of West Fraser’s inability to access economically viable fiber in the region.

Building products suppliers expand partnership

DULUTH, Ga. and CHICAGO — Specialty Building Products, LLC, a leading distributor of specialty building products in North America, will expand its distribution partnership with James Hardie Building Products, the world leader in fiber cement siding and backerboard solutions. SBP will now carry the entire range of James Hardie siding and trim products in its Oklahoma City, Kansas City and St. Louis distribution centers, increasing its number of stocking distribution centers to 14.
