3 troubleshooting tips for processing veneer

What follows are some possible problems, causes and solutions regarding the burning, burnishing and crimping of veneer on the splicer.

1. Problem: Burning of the veneer. Showing dark brown scorch lines on either side of the glue line; usually dominant on the bottom side from the lower heater bar. Possible causes: Excessive heat from either the upper or lower heater bar. Also crystallizes the glue. Solution: Lower the temperature setting as specified on the temperature/thickness chart. Increase the feed rate.

2.  Problem: Burnishing of the veneer. Showing a crushed and shiny surface along the glue line. Possible cause: Too much pressure. Solution: Check the pressure setting.

3. Problem: Crimping of the veneer. The veneer is crimped within 1 inch of either side of the glue line. Possible cause: The inside edges of the feed chains are worn. Solution: Replace the feed chains and/or reduce the pressure.
