Spotlight on designers: Taylor Rachko

Taylor Rachko, co-owner of Distinctive Designs & Storage Solutions

Closet designers are the unsung heroes of organization and style. With an artful blend of spatial creativity and functional finesse, these skilled professionals transform cluttered spaces into personalized havens of order. Behind the seemingly simple task of crafting closets lies a synergy of aesthetic acumen and ergonomic understanding. Closet designers harmonize individual preferences with design principles, weaving together sleek aesthetics, optimal storage, and seamless functionality.

Closets & Organized Storage spoke with Taylor Rachko, co-owner of Distinctive Designs & Storage Solutions, to get her thoughts on the process and what inspires her.

How did you get started in design?
My dad started an epoxy flooring company when I was in high school. And when I graduated, I started working with him. But I needed my own thing, so we decided to add garage storage. But when I went to get trained at the manufacturing plant, [there were closet] displays there, and I fell deeply in love. So, I came back, and he told me he would fund me. I ran with the project, and here we are. Now I do custom closets.

Do you have a particular design style or philosophy? Or a process that you go through?
The process really depends on the client; we range from low-end to high-end clients and builders. So basically, I go into the house and into their closet and measure all their items. I count their shoes. I measure how long their longest dresses are, and I see how they function. I see what their style is. And based on their budget, I try to merge beauty and function together. And again, it depends on the client; sometimes they want to go full-on beauty, and sometimes it’s basic and functional.

Where do you find your inspiration?
My dear friend, Kate. I met her in 2017. We were remodeling my parents’ home, and she was their interior decorator and was amazing. She designed their entire house. So, we hired her. I have no design background at all. I’m a full-fledged businessperson. When she joined, I knew about closets and what to do with closets. But she brought in that design element, that interior decorator feature. And it’s been like the perfect marriage. Now we’re best friends, and she’s my ride-or-die business partner. It’s been amazing. She’s really my inspiration, and she teaches me all the things to know about that aspect of [design].

What is your favorite thing to do on your days off?
I love relaxing, and I love working out. I also love cooking. So, having a nice meal and relaxing. My parents are both chefs, and I love being in the kitchen. Also, a gorgeous walk at night is also nice, but just hanging out relaxing and enjoying life.

Congratulations on being a 2023 40 Under 40 honoree. What did you think when you found out?
Shock? Yeah, shock. I got the email, and I was like, what? I had no idea that Kate submitted me for it. I’m a very humble person, and I don’t love a lot of attention on me. So, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is crazy, 40 Under 40?’ It was a big deal [to me]. So, I was just in complete shock. My heart is so full. And I just, I can’t say enough about Kate because to have a friend like that to just submit me and to be my cheerleader. I love it. I’m so grateful.
